• Alarming Rise in Animal Sexual Assaults in India.
Last year alone, there were over a dozen reported cases of cow rape in India. This is not an isolated incident; in 2022, four people allegedly raped a Bengal monitor lizard in the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve near Gothane village in Maharashtra. Additionally, in Bihar's capital, Patna, a stray dog was allegedly raped by a man. Another horrifying case from 2022 involved a pregnant goat that was believed to have been raped by eight drunken men in Haryana, leading to the goat's death the following day.
India is already known as one of the most dangerous countries for women, but it appears that animals are not safe either. The rise in these heinous acts points to a broader issue of sexual violence and a breakdown of the rule of law.
"We are seeing the worst phase of sexual violence and misogyny now," said Kavita Srivastava, General Secretary of the People's Union of Civil Liberties. "This is the new India where there seems to be a complete breakdown of the rule of law, which is directly affecting women most, as it is also a period of unabashed consolidation of patriarchy."
These incidents highlight a dire need for stricter enforcement of laws and a societal shift to protect both women and animals from such brutal acts.
