In a tragic incident that underscores the rampant drug abuse even within Indian law enforcement agencies, a 24-year-old Punjab Police officer, Gursewak, was found dead in Kayampur village near Ajnala today.
Gursewak, a resident of Tedkalan village, was currently posted in Ludhiana and had been on leave following the death of his aunt.
The circumstances surrounding his death have raised serious concerns. While Gursewak's family alleges that he died due to drug abuse, the police have stated that the exact cause of death will only be determined after an autopsy. Harbans Singh, Gursewak's grandfather, revealed that Gursewak had been recruited into the Punjab Police on compassionate grounds after his father died in the line of duty. Unfortunately, he fell into bad company and began consuming drugs.
Harbans Singh further alleged that drugs are easily accessible in their village and the surrounding areas of Kayampur and Kamalpur.
He accused local drug peddlers of operating with impunity, claiming that the police take bribes from these peddlers instead of taking action against them.
Rajkumar, DSP Ajnala, confirmed that no syringe was found near Gursewak's body. "The police have taken the body into custody and sent it for autopsy. We will take appropriate action after the post-mortem examination report," he stated.
The incident has brought to light the severe drug problem affecting not just the general populace but also those tasked with upholding the law.
