An Aswaraopet sub-inspector, Sriramula Srinivas, succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital in Hyderabad on Sunday after a week-long battle for life following a suicide attempt. Srinivas, a native of Narakkapet village in Warangal district, was transferred from Manugur to Aswaraopet last year. He reportedly took the extreme step due to caste-related harassment by his superiors in the Indian police department.
Following a complaint by Srinivas’s wife, Krishnaveni, the Mahabubabad police registered a case on Friday against Circle Inspector K Jithender Reddy and constables Shiva, Subhani, Sanyasi Naidu, and Shekhar under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Dalit organizations have called for stringent action against those responsible for Srinivas’s death. Pilli Sudhakar, state president of Mala Mahanadu, highlighted the increasing harassment and discrimination faced by Dalit officers in the police system.
In response to the incident, higher officials have transferred CI Jitender Reddy to the office of the Inspector General, and the four constables involved have been attached to the office of the Superintendent of Police.
The issue of casteism remains deeply ingrained in Indian society, despite significant scientific and social advancements. This tragic event underscores the ongoing struggles faced by Dalits, who continue to experience discrimination and harassment.
